    • AMD confirms it’s working with Microsoft on the future of cloud gaming

AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, has confirmed the company is working closely with Microsoft on the future of cloud computing. Given AMD’s ongoing hardware partnership on the Xbox side of the business that does lend more credence to the rumours that the next-gen Microsoft machine could get a Scarlett Cloud version.

Back in July it was rumoured the next-gen Xbox console was going to come in two flavours, one standard hardware box for local gaming and another, more lightweight machine designed for cloud-based gaming. It would reportedly be a low-power device, with a moderate amount of compute power baked into it do deal with specific game-centric tasks like controller input, image processing, and collision detection, with the heavy rendering done in the cloud.

Dr. Su was talking with Jim Cramer, of CNBC’s Mad Money, and was responding to his question about AMD’s relationship with Microsoft, suggesting it was no longer a case of Wintel and more WinAMD. Though, to be fair, that really doesn’t trip off the tongue anywhere near as well. How about AMDows?

“We’re partnered with them in game consoles,” says Dr. Su, “I think we have a vision of where cloud computing is going and we’re working closely with them.”

The earlier console rumours surfaced on Thurrott back in July, after Microsoft mentioned it was at work on its next generation of games console. The CNBC interview could well hint that AMD has been working with Microsoft to create the hardware which enables parts of a game to be computed locally on the low-power device while the heavy lifting is done in Microsoft’s cloud.

The suggestion is that this approach means your game is essentially running in two separate locations at the same time – on your home machine and augmented in the cloud – with a certain level of stitching then required to bring them both together. If this rumour is true then it would seem AMD is busy working on the hardware which nails the local compute portion of the game before it gets paired up with the rest of the game up in the cloud.

“I really think the interesting thing about semiconductors is we’re making decisions now that you won’t see the outcome for 3, 4, 5 years,” says Dr. Su. “I love the fact we’re trying to predict the future and hopefully we make some good decisions.”

It would be very interesting to see what this would mean for PCs if such hybrid cloud gaming took off. With less high-end hardware needed in your home PC, and more done in the cloud, we could see intensive GPU work, such as ray tracing, offloaded into the network.

Though your home machine might be cheaper, you may end up having to pay a subscription to have access to those cloud renderers. The gaming PC price model, even the Windows OS price model, could change completely.

The only thing I can think people will complain about is that it might have lost its "fun" element. My guess is that is what online is for. GoTY leading contender for sure, although FH4 might be a surprise winner in awards which are media rather than gamer driven.

I know it sound weird but that's what they called.

                  Quote:

"This is coupled with generally excellent image quality. Spider-Man utilises Insomniac's temporal injection technique featured in Ratchet and Clank on PS4 Pro. While there is precious little information available on this technique, Insomniac seems to prefer this over typical checkerboarding."

It's definitely generating a lot of purchase interest from the other side but it will get trounced in any public vote because the number of Sony drones and that is even without the GotY elephant in the room that is Red Dead.

The Drones are struggling with this one, most have a PC😆. I think most true PC gamer's are a little envious of X1X owners given the budget performance on tap. But yeah from my experience in the comments section the Pony's are having a hard time of it, and I love it😎.

                • Ways to Play Anthem Before It Launches on February 22, 2019

Discover all the ways you can play Anthem early and choose the option that’s right for you.

As we’re clearing our February social calendars for maximum uninterrupted Anthem™ play time, we wanted to make clear exactly how to take advantage of the different opportunities to play before launch.

There are three different ways that you can play Anthem before it launches on February 22, 2019: the VIP demo, Early Access with Origin Access Premier, and the Play First Trial on EA Access and Origin Access Basic.

                  VIP Demo

The VIP demo kicks off on February 1, 2019 and is open to players who’ve pre-ordered Anthem* as well as current EA Access and Origin Access subscribers**. Both Standard and Legion of Dawn pre-orders receive access to the demo. EA Access and Origin Access members need to have an active subscription at the time of the demo (February 1, 2019) to get access.

                  Early Access

Early access begins on February 15, 2019 for Origin Access Premier members. This lets you play the full game a week before launch on PC. Members will have early unlimited access to EA’s full games on PC to play as much as they want five days before launch, as long as they are subscribed to Origin Access Premier. Origin Access Premier members also receive access to 140+ games in The Vault, our library of games that just keeps growing all the time.

                  Play First Trial

EA Access (for Xbox One) and Origin Access Basic (for PC) members will get to play 10 hours of Anthem as part of the Play First Trial starting on February 15, 2019**. Progress made in the game during the free trial will carry over to the full game if purchased with your 10% member discount or if you become Origin Access Premier member.

Here are also a couple of questions we’ve seen crop up that we’d like to answer directly.

Q: What if I pre-ordered the game but I’m not an EA Access or Origin Access member?

A: If you pre-ordered the Legion of Dawn Edition or the Standard edition, you’ll get access to the February 1 demo. If you pre-ordered but aren’t an EA Access or Origin Access member, you won’t get any Early Access benefits even though you’ll be able to play the full game when it comes out on February 22, 2019.

Q: What do I get as an Origin Access Basic member?

A: If you’re an Origin Access Basic member, you’ll get access to the February 1 demo and the Play First Trial for PC. You’ll get to play 10 hours of Anthem starting on February 15, but you’ll have to purchase the full game when it comes out on February 22, 2019 to play beyond those 10 hours. Upgrading to Origin Access Premier will give you the full game to play as much as you want with Early Access on February 15, 2019.

Pre-order now for VIP access to an Anthem demo.

Keep your eyes open for more as we’re ramping up to Anthem’s release.Make sure to not miss any of it by signing up for the Anthem newsletter for all the latest Anthem news, updates, behind-the-scenes content, offers, and more (including other EA news, products, events, and promotions) by email.

Follow Anthem on Twitter and Instagram.

Anthem launches February 22, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation® 4, and PC. Early Access begins on February 15 for Origin Access and EA Access members.

All this is connected with the new gaming infrastructure, cloud gaming, because from now 20 years of gaming will no longer be the same, and already with this generation started in that direction, Microsoft is chasing everything forward, it is only Sony in the game world than would still be on the level of PS2 architecture and maybe with some minimal developments in the Internet infrastructure, but this way with Microsoft IT is a completely different dimension of story

So then it could be that the artwork recently uploaded by Conar Cross could be showing both concepts for the next Fable and a third IP set in a Sci-Fi setting.

Amazing to look at their back catalogue and see the quality they have output. To think that the original Forza Horizon was their first studio game! I know the were all experienced developers anyway coming from some other top studios but it really shows that every title they have put out in the FH series and also every expansion has not just been a rehash of previous offerings, they have moved things forward and done something new each time. I t will be really great for them to get a non racing game done and I have a lot of confidence that it will be great. It was after they were well into development of their RPG that Microsoft decided to acquire them and then subsequently give them a cash injection to be able to begin a third project. Playground are an amazing success story!

Microsoft could try and replicate the process that ascended Playground games to what I think could be regarded as the best studio they have right now, the are certainly the most decorated this generation. Put one of their new studios working closely with an existing powerhouse such as Coalition, 343 or Rare giving them full access to people, tools, engine tech, assets and technical knowledge and give them the freedom to make any game they want.

Yep! Rare studios are split into four teams three teams are working on new content for Sea Of Thieves and one team is the incubation team they are in charge of creating a new IP and Rare right now have around 250+ employees and they still hiring new talent. The same goes for 343, The Coalition, The initiative, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games, all of them are hiring a lot of talent right now.

Lol 😁 even the uploader is trying to convince himself it's ok 👌 but then he sort of realises it's all for the art 🤣.

The sad part about this is....remember how the pony's destroyed Quantum Break out of the gate because of it's resolution downgrade?
https://youtu.be/nf12d8z2wtE vs https://youtu.be/L2wr7vebb6Y skip to puddle gate 14:20

Good old John he actually said for the most part Quantum Break was upgraded from E3 previous showing's....but all I can seem to remember about this game was dynamic 720p blar blar blar. One thing for sure Quantum Break still is a benchmark 720p or not. But the funny thing is now we have X1X and have the best multiplatform iterations resolution (true 4K) doesn't matter and the mantra is all about the art🤣. God how the industry protects Sony is beyond scary for sure!!!

Ssssh.... I thought I'd put true 4K in brackets so not to shout it out like 1080p makes you a better gamer for the players!🤣mantra 🤣.

The guy said that he was comparing a compressed E3 video of the PS4 version to the PS4 Pro version of the game, and it still looked downgraded... albeit sharper because of the resolution of the Pro.

Seriously though, why do a video comparing the PS4 to the Pro other than to detract from the real issue of the downgrade being significant?

                          • Telltale Games shutdown to leave The Walking Dead's final season incomplete

Following reports that Telltale Games has laid off the majority of its staff, CNET has confirmed that the storied video game studio is planning to close its doors for good, with only a skeleton crew of 25 remaining to "fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners."
Known for pioneering episodic games where the choices you'd make in one episode would carry on to the next -- most prominently The Walking Dead, Batman, Minecraft Story Mode and The Wolf Among Us -- the studio attracted big brands like Game of Thrones, Back to the Future and Guardians of the Galaxy with the same formula. It was working on a Stranger Things game for Netflix before Telltale's collapse. (Netflix said it's figuring out what to do about that now.)
In 2012, CNET praised The Walking Dead game for an "interactive storytelling experience that other zombie games can only dream of delivering."
The Walking Dead game continued with three full seasons (and a Michonne spinoff) in the years since, but it looks like its just-commenced final season will be cut short.

Melissa Hutchinson, who is the voice of long-term survivor Clementine, tweeted a statement over the weekend, as previously reported by Nintendo Life.
"I, unfortunately, like most of you, do not have the details on how this all came to be and I also do not know the fate of the final season of TWD," the actor wrote. "To my knowledge, they will release Episode 2 and then that will be it. It hurts me that you, the fans, will not get to see Clem's journey through to the end."
Hello friends. I am so very deeply moved by the messages of love that I, and the folks from @telltalegames have been receiving. Yesterday was one of the toughest days ever. A lot of hearts were broken, including mine. Please read the attached. #TelltaleJobs #Clementine #TWD pic.twitter.com/Fb68z86j8e
                            — Melissa Hutchison (@Melyhutch) September 22, 2018
The first episode of the game's final season was released Aug. 14 and the second is out on Tuesday. The episodes weren't sold separately; they were only available as part of the season pass, so fans paid upfront for the season in its entirety.
Telltale didn't immediately respond to request for comment.
Hutchinson also noted that The Wolf Among Us won't get its previously announced second season.
"It hurts to know that long-awaited titles like a second season of The Wolf Among Us won't be made," she wrote.
Here's the statement Telltale Games provided Friday:
Today Telltale Games made the difficult decision to begin a majority studio closure following a year marked by insurmountable challenges. A majority of the company's employees were dismissed earlier this morning, with a small group of 25 employees staying on to fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners. CEO Pete Hawley issued the following statement:
"It's been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave https://www.cnet.com/news/telltale-g...complete/today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry."
Telltale will issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks.
                            Here's a statement from Netflix:
We are saddened by the news about Telltale Games - they developed many great games in the past and left an indelible mark in the industry. Minecraft: Story Mode is still moving forward as planned. We are in the process of evaluating other options for bringing the Stranger Things universe to life in an interactive medium.
Though Telltale co-founder and former CEO Kevin Bruner sued the company earlier this year, he also penned a goodbye to Telltale on his blog. "We chose to venture where others dared not go, and we found some success along the way. It took a lot of vision, luck, will power, teamwork, talent, and very long days and nights to get there, but it will forever have been worth it," he said in the blog post.

Wow, Telltale Games is gone now too? Good thing MS is hiring at so many of their studios, because these guys were really talented and it's a shame they're out of work.

To be honest I was never a fan of their work, I just didn't see the point! I bought the Telltale Collection a couple of years back when it was on sale and only ever played through a few episodes of TWD season 1. I found it incredibly tedious and boring. There was a good story in there but the slow searching sections killed the pacing for me and I couldn't be arsed to go through the pain of those to move the story forward. I would rather just watch a boxset on the TV instead,

I don't think this genre is for me, I even struggled getting through Life is strange that felt way more polished and like the choices I made really mattered. Always sad to see a studio go down though, even if I didn't like their work it is still a great loss to the diversity and choice within gaming :(

They did all the Lego games which my son loved too, but I understand your points!

Forza Horizon 4 is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Incredible driving mechanics, cutting-edge seasonal changes in a shared-world, and addictive RPG mechanics make exploring Great Britain an absolute blast.

                            Twinfinite - 10/10

It’s hard to imagine an arcade racer this generation playing and looking much better than Forza Horizon 4. Unless you don’t like racing games, or only appreciate hyper-realism, there’s no other reason that Xbox One and Windows owners should pass this game up. It’s by far the best Xbox One exclusive for 2018, and among the best games this year, period.

                            Gamespew - 10/10

It is, without a doubt, the best racing game available right now. In fact, it might be the best racing game of all time. If you own an Xbox One, you need Forza Horizon 4. It’s as simple as that.

                            Heavy - 9.8/10

Forza Horizon 4 is an exhilarating tour through the beautiful countryside of Great Britain. Racing game fans and non-fans alike need to give this amazing sequel a go.

                            Xbox Tavern - 9.8

Forza Horizon 4 is the most stunning, deepest and most engaging Forza Horizon game to date. The sheer volume of utterly diverse and wildly interesting content pushes the game’s longevity through the roof. There’s no shortage of activities to take to, set across a sprawling, vividly detailed representation of Britain. Safe to say that if you enjoy the series, you’re going to love this.

                            IGN - 9.6/10

I’ll always have a massive soft spot for the down under delights of Forza Horizon 3, but open-world racing has never looked as good as it does in Forza Horizon 4. It combines a beautiful world that’s really four hugely distinct maps in one with a constantly rewarding and self-renewing racing experience and I really can’t tear myself away from it. Playground Games hasn’t just upped the ante once again; it’s blown the bloody doors off.

                            COGconnected - 9.5/10

Pour yourself a spot of tea, butter and jam some crumpets, cozy up by the fireside, and take Forza Horizon 4 for a spin – it’s a bloody good time.

                            God is a Geek - 9.5/10

There is something truly special about Forza Horizon 4 and it is definitely a worthy addition to the series, sitting alongside its predecessor as the pinnacle of racing games.
