  • Google Stadia will be “faster and more responsive” than local gaming hardware

Google Stadia will be faster and more responsive than local gaming systems in “a year or two,” according to VP of engineering Madj Bakar. Thanks to some precog trickery, Google believes its streaming system will be faster than the gaming systems of the near-future, no matter how powerful they may become. But if the system is playing itself, does that really count?

Speaking with Alex Wiltshire in Edge magazine #338, Google’s top streaming engineer claims the company is verging on gaming superiority with its cloud streaming service, Stadia, thanks to the advancements it’s making in modelling and machine learning. It’s even eyeing up the gaming performance crown in just a couple of years.

“Ultimately, we think in a year or two we’ll have games that are running faster and feel more responsive in the cloud than they do locally,” Bakar says to Edge, “regardless of how powerful the local machine is.”
This would be achieved using Google’s homegrown streaming tech, which it’s been teasing ever since Stadia was first announced late last year with Project Stream. The company believes its tech is capable of overcoming the hurdles presented by over-the-web gaming, despite its extensive web of datacentres sitting potentially hundreds of miles away from a user.

Specifically Bakar notes Google’s “negative latency” will act as a workaround for any potential lag between player and server. This term describes a buffer of predicted latency, inherent to a Stadia players setup or connection, in which the Stadia system will run lag mitigation. This can include increasing fps rapidly to reduce latency between player input and display, or even predictive button presses.

Yes, you heard that correctly. Stadia might start predicting what action, button, or movement you’re likely to do next and do it for you – which sounds rather frightening.

So does that count as the fastest system if technically some clever algorithm is playing the game for you? I’m not so sure.

Yup, also you need to pay $60.00 for every game just to play it via streaming only. This guy is completely delusional if he think that a streaming service is faster and more responsive than a local gaming hardware.

        • Sony Interactive Entertainment EU reportedly lays off "dozens" amid restructuring

US-based creative services also affected, employee notice given on same day as PS5 details announcement

Sony Interactive Entertainment's European branch has reportedly laid off "dozens" amid a multi-division restructuring.

GamesIndustry.biz sister-site Video Games Chronicle reports that affected divisions included marketing and PR, in addition to layoffs also occurring on the US creative services team, with at least one employee sharing their situation on Twitter. Some employees are being asked to re-interview for former positions.

This announcement was made to employees on the same day as a Wired report that shared new details on Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5, including its confirmed name and release window of holiday 2020. Some employees reportedly feel this is a sign of the growing influence of SIE America and the reduced influence of the EU side, with American executives coming to the EU to make the announcement and EU employees not being informed of the Wired article reveals at all.

This restructuring appears to be a continuation of an ongoing shift across all of Sony, the effects of which have seen Jim Ryan appointed SIE president and CEO earlier this year, and former SIE Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden departing the company unexpectedly at the start of this month.

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Sony for comment, though VGC notes that Sony declined to comment on the news.

If they can't compete with Scarlett graphically then they have an easy way out... by claiming that they were focusing on new ways to play from the beginning? But if they are competitive then they can dance to that tune now just as well.

Honestly though, I think Sony must have seen Scarlett dev kit specs by now and are loading their pants full of Pony shit, LOL!!!
