I think the Holo Lens tech takes over the concept of Illumiroom. No need for all the projectors and stuff if you are wearing the Holo Lens. Much more feasable for most people also. An Illumiroom set up would be very expensive.

Also adding that I don't think holo lens will take the place of a full blown VR head set but more of the augmented reality type situation. Projecting on the walls in conjuntion with the tv screen. The partnership with Oculus I think is Microsoft's way of addressing full blown VR and that could turn out to be a really great idea. I could see Microsoft buying the company if it takes off.

Oculus is owned by Facebook (they were bought for $2 billion) so I'm not sure about MS acquiring them and they (MS) have a partnership with Valve as well for their VR solution.

MS are working with Oculus and Valve to create a standardised VR API

It means that MS want to be the number 1 choice of OS for VR so that any new 3rd party players coming in with hardware will target Windows 10 / Windows Holographic. Also means that game devs don't have to create multiple versions of a game for different hardware.

Hey I'm good with either one. I just keep imagining playing halo from the in helmet view and being able to turn your head to see different areas of the map. Dude people could get PTSD from shit like that. I wonder if there is any legal liability when it comes to full on VR? That would be interesting to find out.

MS would be no MS if not to create a platform for everybody to use.

Feels like Win10 will cover all bases and will be miles ahead of competitions in terms of features people really want

Its good to see MS being good at what they actually do, making brilliant software. Its surprising what a change can do sometimes. Same people can have same ideas and that can lead to stagnation.

Is there anyone else besides me that think that Tom Clancy won E3 with Rainbow, The Division, and Ghost Recon creating a lot of buzz. I'm in on all three of these games.

Gears of War: Ultimate edition beta is just awesome. They are really doing my favorite game justice. Couldn't be happier. Going to be sad and lost when beta ends.

To be honest, I'm looking forward to some of the indie games (never thought I would say that). Especially D&D! It'll bring me back to the days of Pool of Radiance. But cuphead looks insanely fun.

MS still appears to be working on Illumiroom actually. I don't have the link right now but I posted it on the old site a few weeks ago. They posted a Youtube video of it so you might be able to search for it, it was for the month of June I think and it had something to do with them publishing some details in a special tech publication I believe it was. Anyway, they have it working with off the shelf parts, it only needs one projector now and the original Kinect so it seems like it might be getting closer to a consumer level of cost. The benefit of Illumiroom is no fatigue from a head worn device and no need to purchase multiple devices to use with friends. While a single HoloLens might cost less than an Illumiroom device, the cost benefit changes in it's favor when you consider needing 3 or more HoloLens devices for everyone to use. Of course in time perhaps everyone would have a HoloLens of there own so you wouldn't need to provide them for everyone viewing your TV.

I think there is a space for both products really as they do things differently enough to both be useful, imho anyway. Of course they may never release Illumiroom because like you said HoloLens can do some of what Illumiroom does and in some ways even better, but I think it may still be worth making if they can get the design and cost right in the next few years. I think I'd be interested in it even if I had a HoloLens as I probably can't afford to get an extra HoloLens just to keep for family and friends to use when we game or watch movies, especially when we get 4-7 people viewing the same TV. What would be crazy is if they could use Illumiroom to support HoloLens by filling in for the narrow field of view the HoloLens currently has.

                                            Yeah for sure!

I am still working my way through the MCC campaigns and the Telltale collection from last year. I wanted to get those out of the way (especially Halo) before the big releases start coming through this year. I also want to get into Elite: Dangerous too which I know will be a huge time drain...

I've only given Elite a few minutes of my time...it seemed interesting the controls were kinda screwy for me, but I didn't adjust them...the Elite Controller will be perfect for it. I just didn't have enough time to dig into it...the preview only gives you 60 minutes. I don't know if it is worth purchasing for me.

The Long Dark is pretty interesting a completely different take on a game. Seems fresh and interesting, again only one hour to play it. Enjoyed it though.

I'm waiting for Batman next week...very excited for that one.

What was screwy about the controls? was it because of the flight sim type reversed Y axis? (up on the controller and the crosshair goes down)

I played a lot of the original Elite with my Dad on the Acorn Electron when it first came out in 1984 and loved it. The game will have a lot of nostalgia value for me. People today talk about how some game devs are wizards but it still totally boggles my mind how David Braben and Ian Bell managed to fit the entire Elite world into the severely memory restricted 32KB of memory that the Electron had. Some of those early game developers really were Wizards, the guys today are just pretenders to the throne!

Just to put this into perspective... Games used to be programmed by one or two people who had to have all the skill sets, Elite was made by just two people and there were no game engines, no middleware, no fancy graphics applications, it was all hand coded from scratch. Supposedly, If they had hard coded the names of each of the systems available then that list of names alone would have filled the memory! In those days you loaded games of cassette meaning that there was no way to load assets on the fly, the entire game had to be loaded into memory. The game was a masterpiece and was literally years if not at least a decade before its time. In the year that Elite released we were playing other brand new games like PacLand, 1942 and Marble Madness in the arcades. On computers we were playing Ultimate's (now Rare) Knight Lore, Boulder Dash and Impossible Mission. On consoles we had NES classics like Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and Donkey Kong 3.

Meanwhile, Elite was a fully 3D open world space trading and combat RPG with most of the fundemental features that the new Elite Dangerous has today, mind blown all over again!!! :-D

Even if the field of view doesn't change I'm guessing that it wouldn't be a big problem. After all HL isn't supposed to be fully immersive unlike VR. People can speculate all they like, but I think people have forgotten how to embrace new technology and try to rubbish it before it's even gone on sale, or even before trying themselves. Sad times indeed 😞

I didn't actually play that game until a few years later when I "upgraded" to a ZX Spectrum and got it in one of those big box compilations that were popular at the time.
